I’ve been doing a lot of research on haptic visuality since the topic was introduced earlier this semester. For this research I have been trying to find more films shot on digital, which is my preferred aesthetic due to the interlacing and other various effects. For this research I watched Collateral, Inland Empire and skinamarink, Each of these films have moments where the digital aesthetics, specifically the use of digital “noise”, is used to make the viewer interface with the films on a purely visual level. Collateral and Inland empire are two mainstream examples of this aesthetic, but the relatively recent indie hit skinamamrink is the film that uses this aesthetic in a way that intrests me the most. A lot of the horror and upset in skinamarink comes purely from the use of noise. This is a style i would like to replicate in my own work.
These films are also of intrest to me in how they use haptic visuality to interface with trauma.
I found Skinamarink and Inland empire of particular thematic intrest in this regard. Using works like Trauma and cinema: cross cultural explorations, Snuff: Real Death and screen media, The persistence of History and Death at 24x a second. An idea that comes up is that trauma is something that is inscribed on the brain without it being properly processed by your waking mind. It happens but is not recorded. A camera is always recording . Using digital noise, these films use there format as a shield to protect the viewer from the images captured by the camera. (This is used for some of the violence in collatoral). In Skinamarink and Inland Empire this technique is used in conjuction with haptic visuality, non- linear storytelling and experimental editing. These films all show ways to use older tech in ways that enhance the thematical angles of the film. This is something i would love to work with in my own films and has been a major inspiration for my final project. To test this i have been filming footage of my flat when I wake up, focusing on any angles where i can capture digital grain. On my phone camera this is most prevelent in the corners of the room. It has been in interesting experiment and i aim to combine this by overlaying it with the same shots of my flat during the day.
