For this test shot I wanted to replicate an out of body response to routine by overlaying myself watching myself do things I do everyday like tidying or eating. This is a test for my final project in which the lead character will have a similar experience to show the staleness of their routine. I wanted to try and replicate techniques used by david lynch in Twin peaks (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amgX_81kEYQ 0.41-1.07 scene contains flashing lights) I also think it’s worth noting that the majority of the aesthetic for my final piece is based on inland empire also by Lynch. I was unable to find the scene I wanted to replicate (that being the inciting incident where Laura Dern’s character falls into non-linear time through a film set in the first act) however this scene works as an example of the mood and tone i would like to replicate with the room concept (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRh2L7tJqcI scene contains flashing lights) I edited this scene on davinci resolve. I think before i use this technique in my final film i’ll have to pay more attention to light sources as the split screen effect is noticible in the second scene. To do the effect with more people i would have to use Adobe premier’s masking effect but for a test I feel i’ve learned what to keep an eye out for when it comes to actually utilising this technique.
As it relates to my research question, I’m hoping that this technique allows these themes to be conveyed without dialog and purely through camera movements, sound and editing techniques.
