In discussion with Theo Panagopolous regarding his film “The flowers stand silently watching” When asked about some of the creative decisions he made on his film he stated he found it more important to intellectualise after the fact. This is something I have been thinking about a lot, especially after last semester where I feel I spent more time reading than actually doing. As useful as that was, I felt I had to engage with the course on a more practical level. Following on from this I had a one-to-one discussion with Francis Higson regarding the direction of my final project, through the discussion she helped shape the new direction I wanted to take the project in where the room mentioned in the script becomes a cinema space where a fantasy is viewed on the screen. This works better as Francis pointed out it can be used to represent an out of body experience or dissociation. I also feel this interfaced with the concepts in my film in much more interesting ways and makes the concept less abstract and more visually interesting. It helps that the cinema space is open to students to film in.
I began shooting for my 5 minute expert earlier this month, i wanted to expand on the pov sequence filmed for last semester. I had talked with Kirsten about how to utilise the camera to tell the story, I originally decided to shoot the “out of time” sequences purely through POV but instead I have decided to use a mix of POV shots and other camera angles. I would rather delineate between dream and reality using things like exposure or colour grading. This was what I tried to do on the shoot by making the real footage more exposed and blown out to make the footage glaring and overwhelming. However after talking with Francis i found that she has access to a sony PD-150. This would be perfect for me to use as my original plan was to use my own JVC camcorder to show the difference between real and unreal. I wasn’t able to use the pd-150 for this shoot but for the final project I think it would add a lot to the film. As it stands I feel using the exposure this way has been a useful but failed experiment.
One of the problems i had on this shoot was forgetting to film the entire dream section and only filmed the end where the entity appears. As such I planned to shoot the rest on another day.
